On March 24, 2018, we held the annual "Steps to Success" Shoe Project, a program inspired by Soroptimist's "Dream It, Be It" program.  Event chairwoman Gwen Johnson explained that the Shoe Project combines mentoring and gifts of new shoes to inspire and motivate girls from two East Oakland schools. Mentors from the community generously volunteered their time to help the girls imagine “where your new shoes will take you." Presenters were:
  • Oakland Unified School District Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammel
  • Oakland Police Officers and Technicians, including Antoinette Blue and Carla Vasquez, Sarah Langlais
  • Mills College Soccer Coach Lilia Dosalmas
  • Cosmetologist Pamela Thompson
  • Civil Engineer Carolina Aguilar Wallin
  • Oakland Fire Fighters Felicia Bryant, and Karen Cox
  • Carpenter Olwyn Brown of Carpenters' Local 713
Special thanks to teacher Yitera Martin of Brookfield Elementary School for making the event possible by inviting and making arrangements for the students.  Special thanks also to Carpenters’ Local 713 for their generous gift of donating the supplies for bookends creation activity.
